An eight-month-old baby rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition Saturday following a house fire in Scarborough has since died.

Toronto Police say a 38-year-old man, who was found with self-inflicted wounds inside the home, was also transported to hospital in critical condition.

Officers, along with fire services and paramedics, responded to a call for a fire in the Finch Ave. E. Brimley Rd. area of Agincourt at approximately 11:15 a.m., police said Saturday afternoon.

Two other people – a four-year-old boy brought to hospital for smoke inhalation and a woman in her 70s – were also removed from the home.

“Unfortunately, I’m sad to tell you this, the eight-month-old has been pronounced (deceased), even with the heroic efforts of Toronto paramedic services, fire services, and the doctors and nurses at the hospital,” Duty Insp. Saleem Husain said.

All four are family members, Husain added, without specifying how they are all related.

The investigation is ongoing, with assistance of the Homicide Unit, Forensics Unit, the Ontario Fire Marshal and fire services, he said.

“We understand that this is a very tragic event and will affect the community and the family involved,” Husain said. “We’re providing resources to ensure that we can provide support they’ll need in the future.”

No charges have been laid as the investigation is in its early stages, he said.

Husain declined to describe the injuries suffered by the man, who remained in hospital and also in police custody.

It is unknown how the fire started as that is part of the investigation, Husain added.
