There was some disappointing news for BBC Gladiator fans as host Bradley Walsh shared some ‘bad news’ regarding a key figure in the show.
The beloved BBC programme made its anticipated return to the small screen for a brand new series tonight (January 18), but eagle-eyed viewers would have noticed the absence of one familiar face.
During the broadcast, hosts Bradley and Barney Walsh revealed that Nitro, also known by his real name Harry Aikines-Aryeetey, had suffered an injury while preparing for the competition and as a result, will not be able to participate in the current series.
Addressing the audience, Bradley disclosed: “I have some bad news. Sadly one of our Gladiators suffered an injury in training which means he won’t be able to compete in this series.”
Barney chimed in with some better tidings, expressing: “But the good news is that he’s still here and he’s joining us in the arena right now.”
As Nitro joined the duo on stage, he shared: “Obviously you know I’m explosive, I’m powerful. Sometimes I’m too powerful. And I ended up hurting myself. I’ve got a little bit of a dodgy knee. But these things happen in sport, you know, when you’re pushing yourself as hard as you do.”
Inquiring about his ongoing participation, Bradley asked: “I mean, we’ll still be seeing you throughout the series, right? ” To which Nitro assured: “The pecs aren’t going anywhere – they’re right here. They’re staying here. I need all those Nitro fans out there to give me some energy because I need to recharge.”
Nitro initially informed his followers back in December that he would not be competing in the second series of Gladiators, reports the Mirror.
The star took to Instagram to share some personal news with his followers, revealing: “Speed is my thing, but sometimes life throws a curveball! During training for series 2 earlier this year, I picked up an unexpected knee injury, which means I’ll be shifting gears this series and sitting out the events.”
He reassured fans, however, that he’s not stepping away entirely, adding: “But don’t worry, I’m recharging and more energised than ever! You’ll still catch me bringing the Nitro spirit to your screens, hyping up my fellow Gladiators, and keeping the energy sky-high. Bring on series 2 of Gladiators!”
