Toronto Police have charged a 48-year-old Toronto man in an alleged fraudulent loan scam targeting the Chinese community.
Wing Fung Wilfred Leung faces nine counts each of fraud under $5,000 and possession of property obtained by crime after allegedly approaching younger Chinese residents in the North York area and saying he needed gas money to drive to university or to pick up family.
Police said the accused would allegedly request an e-transfer from the complainant, promise to pay the money back and allow them to take pictures of his identification to gain their trust. The accused would allegedly receive the e-transfer and then cease communications with the complainant.
Investigators are concerned there may be more victims in the North York area.
