Influential Northern Ireland midfielder Shea Charles has emerged as a transfer target of Sheffield United just a few hours after he was recalled from his loan spell at the Blades’ city rivals Wednesday.
Charles, who has played alongside his brother and fellow international Pierce at the Owls, looked set to be handed a fresh Premier League opportunity by struggling Southampton but the 21-year-old is now at the centre of a transfer tug-of-war.
Wednesday fans got the news they feared when Southampton triggered the recall clause in Charles’ contract.
And now Sheffield United have entered the race for the former Manchester City youngster’s signature in another loan move.
The player’s agent has a good relationship with Bramall Lane officials which could help any potential deal.
With Ollie Arblaster sidelined through injury, United have been eyeing midfielders this window.
Charles spent the first half of the Championship campaign with the Owls, even playing in the Steel City derby they lost to Sheffield United.
He could still make a further two appearances for Wednesday due to a seven-day recall rule. With the Saints making the call late on Wednesday evening, the midfielder could feature in Sunday afternoon’s clash away to Leeds and Wednesday’s hosting of Bristol City.
And the Owls haven’t completely given up on getting him back this month.
Owner and chairman Dejphon Chansiri believes Charles is not ready for the Premier League and will fight for his signature again.
“Of course we like him, but what can we do? It is out of our control,” says Chansiri.
“He is not ready for the Premier League. Southampton in this situation he cannot help, Southampton need a better player than this… let’s see.
“If they do that, maybe we do something. Let’s see. Someone damage us then we can damage them as well, let’s see.”
