During the winter months, it’s common to find your windows covered in condensation upon waking up. This happens when the warm air inside your home meets the colder surface of the window glass, leading to moisture build-up.
Unfortunately, this excess moisture can encourage mould growth around your windows, so it’s crucial to address the issue promptly. One homeowner decided to put three recommended methods for preventing condensation to the test and discovered a standout solution.
TikTok user DoingUpMyHome shared her experience: “Have you got condensation on your windows? With the cold weather comes the likelihood of condensation on the inside of your windows. It’s not a good thing to have in your home as it can turn to mould so I searched for a hack to fix this problem.”
“I tried three different hacks over four days and the winner was this – washing up liquid on a clean, dry microfibre cloth.” In her video, she demonstrates applying a 50p-sized dollop of washing up liquid onto the cloth, then thoroughly wiping her entire window pane and frames. She explained: “Wipe it a few times so that there’s no film left on the windows and it worked absolutely brilliant. The main thing here is that it lasts about two weeks so it does need to be redone.”
Impressed by the results, she also applied the hack to her bathroom mirror to prevent it from steaming up after showers, and reports that it worked perfectly. She shared other tactics she attempted, noting: “I did try the bowl of salt (20% effective) and sodium bicarbonate (80% effective). But the washing up liquid hack worked 100% on my windows.”
One user responded to her video saying: “I don’t get this anymore thank god since moving into an A-rated new build.” Another advised: “Open your windows two times a day minimum. 10 minutes. everyday! The only way to hold mould away.”
A third mentioned: “The only thing that works for condensation and to stop mould is to open your windows for at least 30 min every day.” An additional comment from a user highlighted a personal struggle: “This is a massive problem for me. It has my heart broken. My apartment is so cold and my electricity bills in winter is also £1,000 every two months. Every morning I find water running down my windows.”
