Vernon Kay discovered a “personal hygiene” issue that “blossomed and bloomed” while he presented The One Show.

The 50-year-old told his BBC Radio 2 listeners that he discovered a “massive pimple” on Wednesday morning. However, Vernon says the blackhead grew while he presented alongside Alex Jones later that night.

It left the radio star grabbing for his bathroom tweezers before heading into work on Thursday morning. Vernon was taken aback however when he realised his plucked blackhead “looked like a squid”.

The star explained: “This is a bit gross but we’re all friends and it’s been two years now. I said to the team in the studio yesterday that I had a massive pimple and then it blossomed and bloomed on The One Show last night.

“This morning, crikey, we’ve got one of those really bad close-up mirrors, you know, one of those magnifying mirrors. The girls have got it on the main mirror in the bathroom and it multiplies the image by a lot.

“Now this is gross, and I know a lot of people are having lunch but you need to know, ’cause we’re friends and we’re an honest show, we don’t lie, we don’t BS, so what I had to do was get tweezers and pull it.

“It was like a blackhead but it had legs. It was like a squid.”

This was the description given by Vernon, which elicited a reaction from producer Janine Maya-Smith. Vernon then remarked: “It’s therapy for me talking to seven million people about personal hygiene.”

Vernon went on to explain that picking a spot is “so addictive”. The NHS says a blackhead is a “small black or yellowish bump” that forms on the skin.

They are not actually caused by dirt, it says. It explains they are black “because the inner lining of the hair follicle produces colour”.
