Two thieves are sought for using the kindness of an elderly woman to target her in a distraction theft at a Whitby grocery store last week.

Durham Regional Police say the man and woman struck at a FreshCO on Brock St. S. – south of Dundas St. E. – around 3:15 p.m. on Jan. 7.

The senior citizen was leaving the grocery store when the man approached her.

“As he approached the victim, he dropped a case of soda and while the elderly victim was assisting him with picking up the soda, a female suspect went into the victim’s purse and stole her wallet,” police said, explaining the thieves then used the victim’s cards to make various purchases.

Investigators have now released an image of the couple they are looking for.

The man is described as 30 to 40 years old with a heavy build and dark facial hair. He was wearing a long black jacket and white running shoes.

The woman is described as 30 to 40 years old with a heavy build. She was wearing a long black jacket and grey scarf.

The couple drove away from the FreshCO in an unplated white Hyundai SantaFe.
