Jessica Simpson and her husband, former NFL player Eric Johnson, are going their separate ways after 10 years of marriage.
“Eric and I have been living separately navigating a painful situation in our marriage,” Simpson, 44, told People in a statement. “Our children come first, and we are focusing on what is best for them. We are grateful for all of the love and support that has been coming our way, and appreciate privacy right now as we work through this as a family.”
The pair tied the knot a decade ago and share three children: Maxwell “Maxi” Drew, 12, Ace Knute, 11, and Birdie Mae, 5.
The news came after Simpson posted a recent selfie on Instagram, reminding her followers that “Life is short. SMILE while you still have teeth😜.”
Simpson was previously married to Nick Lachey from 2002 to 2006.
Reports that their relationship was on the rocks began in November when Johnson was spotted without his wedding ring as Simpson teased her musical comeback.
“She’s working on music and splits her time between Los Angeles and Nashville. Eric spends all of his time in L.A., where the kids go to school,” a source told People at the time.
“Jess and Eric very much live separate lives.”
Simpson added fuel to the fire with a cryptic post on Instagram as she wrote about her return to music. “This comeback is personal,” she shared, “it’s an apology to myself for putting up with everything I did not deserve.”
It’s a far cry from 2023, when she gushed over Johnson for accepting her career in an interview with .
“I don’t find it hard to love anybody, but I have always thought that I was hard to love, that I was too much for people, or my schedule was too demanding,” she shared. “He knows my heart and understands my heart more than anyone I’ve ever met in my life.”
In a birthday post, she also declared her unwavering love for Johnson.
“Eric turned 44 on Sept 15 and his family gave him all the love cells we have to celebrate his life. My heart is so taken with this Man, I could hardly call it my own…. We love youuuu,” she wrote in 2023.
