A woman has been threatened with divorce after her husband was left fuming over her actions at a brunch event.

The 30-year-old attended the lively event, hosted by a friend, with her 31-year-old husband. The event featured entertainment, music and various performances, including a salsa dance that involved audience participation. When a male dancer asked her to join in, she agreed, thinking it would be “fun and light-hearted”.

However, she didn’t anticipate the routine would involve being carried, swung and dipped. Despite the brief nature of the dance, she went along with it to avoid causing a scene.

Upon returning to her seat, she noticed her husband looked “visibly angry”. Later that night, he accused her of embarrassing and disrespecting him by dancing with another man.

He was so upset that he asked for a divorce. Sharing her story on Reddit, the woman said: “To me, it was an innocent interaction. I didn’t think accepting a dance during a public performance would be such a big deal, but I never meant to hurt or disrespect him.”

She concluded: “I now feel conflicted because while I think his reaction was extreme, I also don’t want to invalidate his feelings.”

She turned to social media for advice and received a flood of responses. One commenter said: “You don’t throw that around or use it as a threat in a marriage. If you’re saying you want a divorce as ‘a threat’, then you’re not emotionally mature enough to be in a marriage. Either way, once it’s said, you cannot take that s*** back.”

However, another commenter felt there was more to the story, saying: “Somehow I feel like there’s a lot more going on here.”

Others agreed her husband’s reaction suggested deeper issues in the marriage, with one saying: “If a guy jumps to divorce over that, he was already 90% there.” This prompted the woman to reply: “This breaks my heart but you might be right”.

Another commenter echoed this sentiment, saying: “If this was enough to set him off, the marriage was already in trouble. He was waiting for a reason to end it, and now he’s found one.”

A further person added: “When you wrote ‘male performer’ in the title, I assumed something a bit more adult entertainment, since there’s no other logical reason why your spouse should be that angry about it.”
