Love Island host Maya Jama has shared the real reason behind her split from basketball star Ben Simmons.
Maya, 30, and Ben, 28, enjoyed a “whirlwind” romance back in 2021 which led to him popping the question.
After eight months into their engagement however, their relationship came to an end.
At the time, reports said the pair had been struggling with their busy schedules as well as long-distance, with Maya based in the UK and Ben living in America.
In her own words this month, she told The Guardian: “It was just a whirlwind romance, and I hadn’t done a lot of the things I wanted to do.
“I hadn’t done Love Island, I hadn’t done the cover of Vogue. I had so many career dreams I wanted to achieve before getting married.”
Following their split, Maya rekindled her romance with Stormzy following their initial split in 2019 after five years together.
Despite trying to make it work for a second time in August 2023 however, they called it quits again in July 2024.
As part of a joint statement at the time, they wrote: “We were 21 and 20 when we first met – both at the beginning of our careers – and spent five years growing together and then five years growing separately, so this final attempt required a whole lot of figuring out, relearning, and unlearning.”
Maya and Stormzy went on to say that they were still friends who “think the absolute world of each other”.
“We still care and respect each other, we are still grateful for the time we’ve had together, and we are still friends and will always be friends,” the pair added.
The Love Island host is now rumoured to be dating Manchester City defender Ruben Dias, 27.
A source recently told The Sun that the pair had been chatting ever since swapping details at MTV’s European Music Awards last year.
Things are said to have heated up between them in December when they reportedly spent New Year’s Eve together.
“They get on really well and obviously make a gorgeous couple, but it’s early days,” the source added.
Neither Maya or Ruben have officially confirmed their romance.
