Derry City have been linked to yet another Northern Ireland international. Tiernan Lynch is keen to sign former Sunderland man Carl Winchester.

The Belfast native, capped once at senior level by his country, is under contract with League One side Shrewsbury Town where he was voted as their player of the year last season.

But Winchester (31) is keen to return home, with Derry keen to land his signature.

“It is hard being over here with all your family back in Ireland. It is the sacrifices they make for me to have this career,” he told the Shropshire Star.

Carl’s brother Jude is a well known figure in the Irish League, with stints at Cliftonville, Ballymena United and Crusaders. He is currently on the books of Ballymena League side St James’ Swifts.

New Derry boss Tiernan Lynch has targeted experienced players in his transfer dealings so far, signing Shane Ferguson (Rotherham), Gavin Whyte (Portsmouth) and Liam Boyce (Hearts), all senior internationals.
