A south Belfast Tesco is to relocate as part of a major move and redevelopment of a wholesaler near the M1 motorway.

Tesco has received approval from Belfast City Council’s planning committee to redevelop the Makro cash and carry store in the Kingsway area of the city.

It will relocate its Dunmurry store to the Makro site, and has announced it will hold a consultation session for the local community this month.

The existing Makro store will be divided between the two businesses, which will have separate entrances. Makro is owned by the Booker Group, which is a subsidiary of Tesco plc.

The redevelopment of is due to be completed in 2027, and will see Tesco’s Dunmurry store close.

The work will change the layout of the carpark at Makro, and will include the building of a Tesco petrol filling station.

A spokesperson for Tesco said: “We value the loyalty of our local customers and those within the local business community and we are encouraging their input to our proposals through a public consultation drop-in event being held at the Beechlawn Hotel in Dunmurry from 2pm-7pm on January 23.

“The proposed new Tesco store will co-exist seamlessly with Makro, featuring two entrances that provide easy access to both establishments, ensuring that both can thrive in a revitalised retail environment.

“We are also seeking permission to build a new petrol filling station.

“The existing Dunmurry store is not owned by Tesco but has been on a long-term lease with our landlord. This lease is due to end in 2027.

“We are really proud to be part of the Dunmurry community and remain committed to serving our local customers.

“The proposed new store would allow us to continue to offer exceptional service, create jobs and provide a wide range of products to customers in an improved shopping environment.”
