Solo travelling can be an enriching experience, offering a chance to explore the world and gain independence. However, it’s crucial to prioritise safety as unexpected situations can arise at any moment.

Ani, a solo traveller, shared her unsettling experience while checking into a hotel at Newport Beach in California. She recounted how the hotel receptionist announced her room number aloud, causing discomfort as another man was within hearing distance.

“There’s like a code to get in rather than a key, and he’s like ‘okay it’s in your email but I’ll write it down.’ And he wrote down the number, and there was a guy from like a nearby restaurant giving business cards and so the guy heard my room number and watches the guy write my code down on the piece of paper.”

Ani then sought advice from her viewers, unsure whether she should request the hotel to change her room’s code as she felt uneasy staying there. “I don’t think that guy’s intentions were anything negative, but like, this guy has my room number and saw the code,” she expressed.

Many people quickly responded in the comments, showing their support for Ani and advising her to inform the hotel about their mistake.

One individual, a former hotel manager, advised: “Former hotel manager here, 100% you should not accept a room where you feel someone has heard the room number or code. If the front desk associate gives you pushback, insist on talking to the manager on duty,” Another person chimed in with: “As soon as they say room number out loud you say now give me a new room because you said it out loud.”

A third person, who used to be a flight attendant, added: “I was a flight attendant a million years ago and this was safety 101. If they say your room number out loud, you request a different room,”.
