For those planning to get more active in 2025, the UK’s stunning coastlines could be the perfect destination. Gym memberships usually see a surge of over 25% in January, but for those who prefer the great outdoors, a beach walk might be a more appealing option.

New research has unveiled the best English beaches for a walking trip. The outdoor specialists at GO Outdoors have rated and ranked England’s top winter beach walks, considering factors like average rainfall, temperature, daylight hours, and popularity.

Bamburgh Beach in Northumberland came out on top, with visitors praising its beautiful sands, breathtaking views, and fantastic walks. Located on the northeastern coast, this sandy beach overlooks the Farne Islands, known for their puffins, seals, and other wildlife.

Despite an average temperature of just 5.5 degrees, it’s still a wonderful destination – just remember to wrap up warm.

Hot on Bamburgh Beach’s heels was Dorset’s Durdle Door, which is also a prime spot for fossil hunting during the winter months. Robin Hood’s Bay and Beach in Whitby took third place, being hailed as a great location for a winter walk, thanks to the beach’s structure providing shelter from the rain, reports the Express.

Calum Jones, a blog author and outdoor enthusiast at GO Outdoors commented on the study results: “Although the cold weather may cause people to stay inside, there is no better time to explore the UK than the winter months.”

Highlighting the quieter beaches, he said: “As crowds disperse, visitors to beaches often find themselves with miles of coastline to themselves. Some beaches, such as Robin Hood’s Bay, often remove car parking charges, and local eateries offer discounts during the off-season months. You may even spot local wildlife, such as seals, who return to the shore in winter months.

“I would recommend wrapping up in the colder months, wearing base layers, and investing in a good waterproof jacket to ensure you can enjoy English beaches no matter the weather.
