Toronto Police are warning people to stay off frozen lakes, rivers and ponds after a man in his 70s died Friday morning at the Toronto Islands.

Police found his body after the victim fell through the ice and into Lake Ontario in the Lagoon Rd. and Centre Island Pkwy. area at around 9 a.m.

Police say ice can break and put you at serious risk of falling into freezing water.

PortsToronto also echoed those warnings to the public.

“A friendly reminder: While ice may form within the Harbour, it is never safe to walk or skate on,” the transportation agency wrote on social media this week.

“Stay safe this winter — avoid walking on the ice and exercise caution near the water’s edge.”
