John Higgins has sparked controversy ahead of his Masters first-round clash with Ronnie O’Sullivan by suggesting his long-time rival is in decline.
The Scottish snooker legend made the bold claim as he prepares to face the defending champion at Alexandra Palace.
Speaking to SportsBoom, Higgins predicted that the famous ‘Class of ’92’ – comprising himself, O’Sullivan, and Mark Williams – will soon be “past it”.
O’Sullivan enters the tournament as the reigning Masters champion, having secured a record-extending eighth title in 2024 by defeating Ali Carter in the final.

However, Higgins believes the era of dominance for his generation is drawing to a close.
Higgins pointed to Judd Trump and Kyren Wilson as the sport’s current leading players on the tour.
Trump has demonstrated his dominance by claiming three titles, including the UK Championship.
Wilson, the reigning world champion, has also impressed with victories at the Xi’an Grand Prix and Northern Ireland Open.
“Kyren and Judd could be the big rivalry, but it could change so quickly,” Higgins told SportsBoom.

“I think in the next ten years the Class of ’92 will be past it, but I’m sure the other boys will be competing, and new rivalries will be made.”
The Scot believes these two players will be at the forefront of the sport’s future. “Those two guys will be competing against each other for the next few years,” he said.
Despite highlighting Trump and Wilson, Higgins was quick to acknowledge other established champions in the sport.
“You can never write off Mark Selby, Neil Robertson and Shaun Murphy, they’re all unbelievable champions,” he stated.

He emphasised that these players often get overlooked in discussions about the sport’s elite.
“I don’t mean that in a derogatory way. People think the Class of ’92 and then guys like Judd and Kyren,” Higgins explained.
“You’ve got three guys there who are among the best to ever pick up a cue and I know because I’ve played them at their best. They’re incredible.”
The Masters tournament begins this Sunday, January 12, at Alexandra Palace.

This year’s event features an increased prize fund, with the winner set to receive £350,000, up from last year’s £250,000.
Higgins, who has won the Masters twice before, has played down his own chances of securing another title.
O’Sullivan, meanwhile, will be using the tournament as preparation for his attempt at a record-breaking eighth World Championship at the Crucible in May.
The ‘Rocket’ has remained non-committal about his retirement plans, stating he will continue playing professionally while competing at the top level.
