Former presidents and dignitaries are gathering at Washington National Cathedral today for the state funeral of Jimmy Carter, who died on 29 December aged 100.

President Joe Biden will deliver a eulogy at the invitation-only service, which begins at 10am EST.

Former President Barack Obama and President-elect Donald Trump are among those expected to attend the ceremony.

Carter’s casket departed the US Capitol this morning, where it had been lying in state since Tuesday.

The former president’s remains will later be returned to his hometown of Plains, Georgia, for a private burial alongside his wife Rosalynn, who died in November 2023.

The weeklong public farewell to Carter began on Saturday when a motorcade carried his remains from Plains, Georgia, to Atlanta.

Family, friends and Carter Presidential Center employees gathered in Atlanta for a ceremony where Carter’s son Chip thanked his late parents for their service.

The public paid their respects at the Carter Presidential Center from Saturday through Tuesday.

President Biden has declared 9 January a national day of mourning, with flags at half-staff and federal agencies closed.

Following today’s service, Carter’s body will be flown to Georgia by 2pm for a private funeral service and procession through downtown Plains at approximately 3:45pm.
