Everton have sacked Sean Dyche with the club struggling in the Premier League as they battle relegation.

The Friedkin Group took over the club last month and have made the decision to axe the 53-year-old, whose contract was set to expire at the end of the season.

The decision comes five days after a 1-0 defeat to Bournemouth, where they failed to register a shot on target.

Reports emerged that Friedkin Group were looking at other options and Dyche admitted that his new bosses ‘should’ be reviewing his position.

Leighton Baines will take charge of the FA Cup tie against Peterborough on Thursday evening at Goodison Park.

Club captain Seamus Coleman will also work alongside Baines for the match, though no decision has been made on a permanent successor.

A club statement read: “Everton Football Club can confirm that Sean Dyche has been relieved of his duties as Senior Men’s First Team Manager with immediate effect.

“Ian Woan, Steve Stone, Mark Howard and Billy Mercer have also left the Club.

“The process to appoint a new Manager is underway and an update will be provided in due course.

“Under-18s Head Coach Leighton Baines and Club Captain Seamus Coleman will take charge of first-team affairs on an interim basis.”

Everton are 16th in the Premier League, winning just three of their 19 league matches this season.

They sit just a point above the relegation zone, though they do have a game in hand over 18th-placed Ipswich Town.

Defeat to the Cherries had extended Everton’s winless streak to five matches – while their record in front of goal has been absymal.

They have scored just 15 times in the Premier League – the second-worst total in the division above Southampton.

And the Toffees have not scored a single goal in eight of their last 10 league matches.

Dwight McNeil and Iliman Ndiaye are their top scorers with three each.

Dyche was commended for steering Everton away from relegation trouble last season despite the club being hit by two point deductions.

The former Burnley boss took over in January 2023 from Frank Lampard and leaves with a record of 26 wins, 26 draws and 32 defeats in 84 games.

Permanent successors are yet to come to light but potential options include Paulo Fonseca, who was recently sacked by AC Milan.

The Portuguese coach was in charge of AS Roma from 2019 to 2021, who Friedkin Group also own.

A potentially extravagant option also includes Jose Mourinho, who has been linked with Everton before.

The former Chelsea, Manchester United and Tottenham boss has reportedly been angling for a return to the Premier League in recent weeks.

Currently in charge of Fenerbahce, Mourinho has been left aggrieved by the standards of Turkish football and particularly the officiating.

Everton’s next Premier League match comes on Wednesday night when they host Aston Villa.
