Stephen Nolan has issued an update to social media followers concerned about his wellbeing while he’s in California as wildfires grip parts of the state.

The BBC presenter has assured people he is “safe” in Santa Cruz, spending time at a “beautiful beach in Carmel”.

Northern Irish people visiting or living in Los Angeles have also been posting updates online about their safety as fires spread.

Brendan McDowell, who runs the cosmetics brand BPerfect, was last night preparing in case he needed to evacuate his LA residence, after an evacuation order was sent for the neighbouring Palisades area.

Mr McDowell and his partner Tony have been in LA since last month, having travelled there ahead of the birth of their daughter Enya, who was born through surrogacy.

The Co Down man took to social media in Tuesday night to share updates as the fires progressed, in one video posted to Instagram smoke could be seen in the distance, but Mr McDowell said that the fires appeared to be progressing away from his residence.

Mr McDowell later revealed that an evacuation notice had been issued for the nearby Palisades area, prompting the family to prepare for a potential evacuation

He shared a video on Instagram of his baby daughter in a car seat, saying that the family “have bags ready to go just in case.”

Derry-born actress Roma Downey has said she is “praying” for her neighbours in the city who have been impacted.

An Instagram post read: “We are experiencing very intense gusty winds and it’s going to be a long night here.

“Once again our front line rescue workers and fire fighters are extraordinary. Praying for all those impacted.”

Thousands have had to evacuate from suburbs of Los Angeles as wildfires have spread into the city after starting in a nature reserve.

Governor of California Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency, and the LA Fire Department has appealed to off-duty firefighters to help battle the blazes.

The Pacific Palisades neighbourhood, which has many famous residents, has been hit hard, with traffic jams forming as people leave their homes.

Former BBC NI journalist Emma Vardy, who lives in LA, has described being faced by “apocalyptic scenes” while driving towards the fires.

Vardy, now the BBC’s LA correspondent, said that she could see two of the fires from her apartment in the North Hollywood district.

“A scary sight to awake to, wind howling”, she said in a post on X.

Meanwhile, Mr Nolan paid tribute to the area by saying that southern California has “such a special place in my heart & I’m thinking about all those who are affected by the fires”.

He shared a picture of himself on X sleeping on a bench as he confirmed he was safe and said it was “really lovely” that many people had been in touch to check in on him.

He added: “The people staying at my house back home in NI while I’m away say the weather is awful – so stay safe!”
