Calgary police have identified two more victims and laid additional charges against a Calgary man accused of using his position as a volunteer sponsor to commit sexual offences against newcomers.

One of the victims alleges he was repeatedly physically assaulted by the accused nearly six decades ago, police said.

The victim came forward after recognizing the name in a media release as that of a teacher from 1967 who had repeatedly physically assaulted him while he was a student, police said.

Police say another victim met a man assigned to families new to Canada through a local organization. The suspect leveraged his position as a volunteer sponsor and took advantage of the victim’s immigration status to commit sexual offences, police said.

Robert Edward Choquette, 83, of Calgary has been charged with four additional counts of sexual assault, one count of criminal harassment and three counts of assault causing bodily harm.

Choquette is set to appear in court on Jan. 29.

Police had previously charged the volunteer sponsor with three counts of sexual assault in November, after receiving reports of multiple incidents by a newcomer to Canada.

At the time, police said the suspect was helping families enter Canada through the immigration process when the alleged assaults took place.

On Oct. 12, the victim reported multiple sexual assaults to police that were said to have occurred between December 2023 and June 2024.

An investigation found that a man assigned to a newcomer family had sexually assaulted the victim on three separate occasions, police said at the time.

“We understand the immense bravery required for a sexual assault victim to come forward,” Insp. Keith Hurley of the Calgary Police Service said in a news release at the time. “In this situation, we also acknowledge the added fear regarding the potential impact on their immigration status. We are encouraged that the victim reported the assaults, enabling us to hold the offender accountable. We want to reassure everyone that reporting a crime will not affect your immigration status.”

Anyone with further information about the incidents is asked to contact police by calling 403-266-1234. Tips can also be submitted anonymously to Crime Stoppers.

CPS is encouraging anyone who believes they have been a victim of sexual assault to contact police, no matter when the incident occurred, at 403-266-1234, or by calling 911 if they are in immediate danger. There is no statute of limitations on criminal sexual offences in Canada and police encourage anyone who has been a victim of a serious crime to report it, even if many years have passed since the incident.
