People in Bristol are waking up this morning to find last night’s snow and ice washed away – as the Met Office has issued a new yellow weather warning ahead of 24 hours of rain which is set to soak the city.
The yellow weather warning from the Met Office is in place until 9am tomorrow morning (January 5), and cautions that: “Further heavy rainfall may lead to some travel disruption in places.”
Up to 30mm of rain is expected to fall across some parts of the south-west, with flooding and spray on roads expected to increase journey times, as well as public transport services such as trains and buses also likely to be impacted and face delays.
The weather warning is in place across the whole south-west region, including Bristol, Somerset, North Somerset, Bath and North East Somerset, South Gloucestershire, Devon, Cornwall, and Wiltshire.
The full warning reads: “Further spells of rain, heavy at times, through the course of Sunday and overnight into Monday morning, will bring the potential for some difficult travelling conditions and perhaps some localised surface water flooding.
“Through this period, a further 15-20mm of rain could fall quite widely, with perhaps 30mm in a few locations, this most likely in south-west England. Rain, perhaps with a little wet snow on its back edge, will clear to the east through Monday morning.”
It comes as Bristol has already been hit with heavy rainfall overnight, with up to 32mm of rain falling in some parts of the city at around 10.30pm on Saturday night, washing away the snow from earlier in the evening.
More heavy rain is expected to fall throughout this evening (Sunday) from around 7.15pm, and will continue overnight before clearing at around 7am on Monday morning, according to weather maps.
