A 13-year-old boy has died after a crash involving a quad bike.
The young boy has been named locally as Tiarnán Trainor.
The tragedy occurred on Thursday, January 2 and is the first road death of 2025 in Northern Ireland.
The PSNI received a report of a boy being injured following an incident involving a quad bike on the Low Road, Killeavy.
He was taken to Royal Victoria Hospital where he tragically died.
A death notice said he died as a result of an accident.
It added that he was the loved and cherished son of Conor and Majella Campbell, Conor’s partner Sharon and Majella’s partner Scott.
Tiarnán was also the much loved brother of Aimee and Ellie-Mae, devoted grandson of Donal and Mary Trainor and Gervase and Teresa Campbell.
SDLP Councillor in Newry Doire Finn said this is an “unspeakably sad tragedy”.
She added that her thoughts and prayers are with the family of the young boy who has died.
Inspector Cherith Adair said: “The road, which was closed, has since reopened.
“An investigation to establish the circumstances is underway and anyone who may have witnessed the collision or anyone with CCTV, dash-cam or doorbell footage that could help with enquiries, is asked to contact police on 101 quoting reference CW 785– 02/01/25.”
