BBC Breakfast experienced a significant technical mishap just moments into its most recent episode, prompting presenter Sally Nugent to offer an on-air apology to those tuning in. The 53 year old presenter was joined on the iconic red sofa with colleague Jon Kay this Monday (December 30), delivering the morning’s top news stories.
A live link with reporter Nina Warhurst at a supermarket in Garstang, Lancashire, ended abruptly due to technical difficulties while discussing food waste and how stores can help reduce surplus unsold goods. After setting the scene about the staggering amount of food wasted during the festive season – over 270,000 tonnes – Nina spoke with a shop worker about their involvement in the Too Good To Go initiative, a service allowing customers to purchase excess food through an app.
However, the broadcast was abruptly cut short when technical issues arose. Sally reassured viewers with: “I’m really sorry but we appear to have lost our line to Nina there. We will go back to her though later on this morning, just a few little technical problems there.”
An hour later, Sally and Jon returned to Nina who then completed her report without further glitches.
This occurred a day after Nina was called upon to assist when a colleague on a live broadcast suffered a coughing fit, reports the Express.
During her programme, Nina was covering the recent headlines which included the devastating news that a plane with 181 passengers and crew met with an accident at an airport in South Korea on its arrival from Bangkok, Thailand. Over the course of the show, she maintained a link with BBC News’ South East Asia Correspondent, Jonathan Head, who was on the ground in Bangkok providing live updates on the dreadful event.
Amidst his coverage, Jonathan was interrupted by bouts of coughing, causing him to temporarily halt his report, punctuated with a courteous: “Excuse me.”
Nina swiftly offered a gesture of concern, suggesting: “Jonathan with the latest from Bangkok, maybe grab some water? Thank you Jonathan for the update!”.
