Well-known television host Bradley Walsh, who regularly appears on our screens on ITV’s The Chase and BBC’s Gladiators, has opened up about his struggle with an eye condition. The celebrity quiz show host must eventually go under the knife to correct the problem.
In a 2021 interview, he said: “People don’t realise I have seriously bad blepharitis. I have to take one pill a day for it or I really struggle.
“I am going to need my eyes operated on at some point to sort it out. So many times, people have commented on how I look. But they don’t realise. If I take medication, though, I’m fine.”
Blepharitis is identified by the NHS as an issue leading to swollen, red and itchy eyelids. It can also produce crusty flakes similar to dandruff on the eyelashes, notes the National Eye Institute.
To manage the condition, GPs may suggest antibiotic creams or ointments applied directly to the eyelid, particularly if symptoms persist after regular cleaning. Should blepharitis lead to additional complications like cyst formation, antibiotic drops or pills could be necessary, reports the Mirror.
Symptoms of blepharitis include:
This often results from excess bacteria around the base of the eyelashes; while bacteria are typically found on the skin, an overabundance can create issues.
Blepharitis, a condition that can occur when the oil glands in your eyelids become blocked or irritated, is not life-threatening but can lead to complications such as dry eye syndrome, cyst formation and even conjunctivitis. It’s a persistent condition that requires lifelong management through regular eyelid cleaning.
On a lighter note, Bradley will be gracing our TV screens on Boxing Day, hosting a festive special of the classic game show Blankety Blank at 9pm on BBC One. He’ll be accompanied by celebrity guests including Jane McDonald, Oti Mabuse, Joel Dommett, Jonathan Ross, Sara Pascoe and The Vivienne.
Fans of the 64 year old can also tune into ITV for a Christmas special of The Chase, which first aired on December 25, featuring actor Tony Maudsley, Olympic champion Bryony Page, comedian Kerry Godliman and TV presenter Alexander Armstrong.
