A man in his late 80s tragically has tragically lost his life in a car crash on Christmas Day. The incident occurred on the N55 at Clarebane, County Cavan, Ireland, after midnight and involved two vehicles.
Despite the best efforts of emergency services who rushed to the scene, the elderly man was pronounced dead. His body was subsequently transported to Cavan General Hospital for post-mortem examination.
The four passengers from the second vehicle were also taken to the same hospital, but their injuries are not life-threatening. The road remained shut until this afternoon as forensic collision investigators carried out their work.
Gardai have issued an appeal for any witnesses to step forward. Meanwhile, another man in his 30s has died on Downpatrick Road in Ballynahunch, County Down, Northern Ireland, following a separate single-vehicle crash last night.
Inspector Cherith Adair, from the Collision Investigation Unit said: “Police received a report at approximately 4.45pm, that a car had been involved in a collision. Officers attended, alongside our colleagues from partner emergency services.
“Sadly, the driver died at the scene. The Downpatrick Road, which was closed for a period of time following the collision, has since re-opened.
“Collision Investigation Unit detectives are investigating the circumstances of the collision, and would like to hear from anyone who witnessed the grey VolksWagen Polo or anyone who may have captured dashcam or other footage which could assist with our enquiries.”
