As households brace for another energy price hike this winter, experts have revealed a series of “little-known tips” that could help prevent overspending on bills during the coldest months.
With many families already struggling with high costs, these practical measures could make a significant difference to household budgets.
From simple boiler adjustments to smart technology solutions, heating and electricity experts say these often-overlooked changes can lead to major savings if used consistently.
The advice comes as particular concern grows for elderly and vulnerable customers facing difficult choices about heating their homes this winter.
Energy bills are set to increase by 1.2 per cent in January 2024, Ofgem announced, with annual household costs rising from £1,717 to £1,738 across England, Wales and Scotland.
However, experts stress there are numerous ways households can reduce their energy consumption and manage costs during the colder months.
Gareth Kloet, Go Compare energy spokesperson, said: “Winter is a time when many families start thinking more about their energy use at home as we start using more heating, hot water and lights, the costs go up, and this can really impact our household bills.
“There are many things you can do to limit your energy usage, and while they may seem like small changes, the savings can add up if you stick to them over time.”
Gordon Wallis, heating expert from Your NRG shares expert tips aimed at helping Britons maximise their heating usage while avoiding unnecessary expenses.
Boiler Settings
He said: “Adjusting your combi boiler’s temperature settings is a simple and effective way to optimise energy usage. By dialling back the heat and hot water settings, you can use less energy and keep your bills down.
“Using smart thermostat technology can also help temperature control, further optimising heating efficiency and reducing energy costs.”
Boiler Smart Technology
Having a boiler timer or programmer provides precise control over heating schedules, aligning energy consumption with actual heating needs. Wallis explained that by programming heating cycles to match occupancy patterns, households can avoid unnecessary energy spend, resulting in tangible cost savings and improved energy efficiency.
He said: “Many homeowners overlook the significance of boiler settings, which heavily impact heating system efficiency and overall comfort. Knowing how to maximise your boiler usage can lead to substantial energy savings and enhanced home comfort.”
Annual Boiler Servicing
An annual service for the boiler might seem like a hassle, but it’s “key to keeping it running efficiently and avoiding bigger repair bills later on,” he explained.
Wallis said: “Investing in routine maintenance not only optimises boiler performance but also safeguards against unexpected expenses, ensuring prolonged system longevity.”
Utilise Zoned Heating
With zoned heating, people can set different temperatures for different areas of their home. Smart thermostats take this further, letting people adjust heating based on who’s home and which rooms they’re using, blending “comfort with savings.”
Wash Clothes at Lower Temperatures
Wallis continued: “Lowering the washing machine temperature to 30 degrees not only saves energy but is kinder to the planet. Thanks to eco-modes on modern machines, you can still get your clothes clean while using less power.”
Prioritise Home Insulation
Investing in proper insulation can be a “game-changer for keeping your home warm without turning up the heat”, he said.
Effective insulation gets rid of heat transfer through walls, floors, and ceilings, ensuring consistent comfort and reducing reliance on heating systems.
Clean Radiator System
Wallis said: “A clean radiator system is essential for maximising heating efficiency and prolonging boiler lifespan. Sludge buildup within pipes and radiators can impair system performance, leading to uneven heating and increased energy consumption. Cleaning methods such as power flushing, ensure optimal system functionality and validate your warranty.
Set Your Radiator Valves Correctly
“Adjusting your thermostatic radiator valves makes sure you’re heating your home just right and prevents energy wastage. Having smart valves gives you even more control, fine-tuning the heat for just-right comfort and efficiency.
Turn Down Radiators
“During warmer months, it’s wise to be mindful of which rooms really need heating. Turning down radiators in rooms you’re not using saves energy and keeps the heat where you want it. It’s a smart move for your comfort and your wallet.”
