On Monday, police were notified that a suspect stole a large GMC cutaway van from the loading dock of Edmonton’s Food Bank, located at 115 Avenue and 120 Street, while it was being prepared to pick up donations.
The van’s GPS tracking device was initiated and members of the Edmonton Police Service’s targeted response to auto theft prevention team responded and found the van in the alleyway near 104 Street and 119 Avenue.
Police said they saw the suspect painting over the food bank’s logos. The suspect tried to flee when he saw the police, but the van got stuck in the snow and he was arrested shortly after, officers said.
The acrylic paint used by the suspect was stolen from a nearby store, according to officers.
Jacob Doucette, 31, is charged with theft of a motor vehicle, theft under $5,000, mischief under $5,000, and uttering threats.
“Non-profits such as our local Edmonton food bank rely heavily on their vehicles to help the communities they serve,” said Sgt. Brian Carfantan in a press release.
