A lot of things can go wrong in sparring, but rarely do mixed martial artists have to worry about damaging their penis.
Well, Mateus Mendonca had a horrible jiu-jitsu training session recently, with it ending with Mendonca suffering a broken penis.
The 25-year-old Brazilian was hurt during sparring in in Maranhao, Brazil, according to MMA Fighting.
Oddly, Mendonca didn’t go to hospital until a month after the injury happened. He won’t be able to spar again for another two months, according to the report.
Mendonca is 11-3 in MMA, including a kneebar win over Luan Matheus recently.
“I was training with (a teammate) and he landed his knee on my penis, and I felt an absurd pain and went to the bathroom.” Mendonca told MMA Fighting in describing the incident.
“I was in Sao Paulo the other day, and my thing looked weird, it looked different, it has a lump.
“My girl told me to go to the hospital and they did an ultrasound exam, and told me to go to a different hospital right away for an emergency surgery.”
He said doctors told him to stay home and “do nothing,” not even teach MMA, so he has no source of income.
“I can’t teach and train, so I’m raffling that to have some money. I have a little daughter, and I brought my family with me to Sao Paulo to start training.”
Mendonca is selling off items like his UFC shirt and gloves to raise money. He also said fighters should always wear a protective cup while training.
