A teenager caught driving at “a grossly excessive speed” in Co Tyrone has been handed an extended disqualification.

Police carrying out a routine patrol on the M1 motorway at Dungannon on August 31, detected an Audi A3 travelling at 102mph — 32mph in excess of the legal limit.

Liam Riley Gange (19) from Main Street, Maguiresbridge, accepted the offence at the scene and was advised he would be reported for prosecution.

A defence solicitor at Dungannon Magistrates Court pointed out the road in question reduced risk, with no potential of any vehicles approaching in the opposite direction.

It was also contended the police officer at the scene had advised Gange he would make a note that the road was clear of traffic and weather conditions were good, however, this was not contained within any statements provided to the court.

Deputy District Judge Philip Mateer told Gange: “The court would be failing in its duty if it were not to disqualify you for driving at 102mph.

“It was a grossly excessive speed all the more so for an inexperienced driver who has only been driving for around a year.”

He imposed a fine of £500 and disqualified driving for 12 months.
