Rob Brydon, known for his role in ‘Gavin and Stacey’, has given fans reason to believe that the series’ infamous fishing trip will remain shrouded in mystery.
The cherished Welsh performer is set to return as Uncle Bryn one final time as the beloved BBC sitcom gears up for its ultimate episode this Christmas Day. Fans of the show are eager for closure after being left on tenterhooks from the 2019 Christmas Day special’s cliffhanger ending.
In said dramatic finale, we watched Nessa, portrayed by Ruth Jones, pop the crucial question to Smithy, brought to life by James Corden, amid the backdrop of Gwen’s Barry Island residence. However, Smithy’s answer still hangs in the air unresolved.
Viewers are now hopeful that the upcoming denouement will not only address the romantic suspense but also illuminate the enigmatic happenings of the much-talked-about fishing excursion.
This jest has been threading through the show’s narrative fabric: the cryptic outing involved Brydon’s character Uncle Bryn and his nephew Jason, played by Robert Wilfort, hinting at some undisclosed event that caused tension between them for years while remaining a well-kept secret, reports Wales Online.
Appearing on Jamie Laing’s Great Company podcast today, December 23, Brydon insinuated that what transpired during that fateful outing might forever remain a riddle. Prodded by host Jamie to reveal the clandestine details, the 59-year-old quipped: “I’m not going to tell you. You wouldn’t really want to know, would you?”
Brydon then likened the mystery to the anticipation of unwrapping presents, saying: “I’m somebody who, if my wife has bought me a present, say at Christmas, and it’s under the tree, there is no part of me that wants to go ‘I wonder what it is’.
“No, no, no, I am for delayed gratification. Let’s wait, let’s enjoy it. And even when I’m opening it, I’m opening it slowly.”
The hit series that has garnered critical acclaim shadows the lives of main characters Gavin (played by Matthew Horne) from Essex and Stacey (portrayed by Joanna Page) from South Wales, focusing on pivotal moments in their long-distance romance and the lively coming together of their families.
First broadcast in 2007 on BBC Three, ‘Gavin and Stacey’ ran for 20 episodes across three series. The entire original cast returns for the grand finale, with notable appearances from Uncle Bryn and Jason, setting the stage to address the series’ lingering enigma once and for all.
James Cordon, a co-creator of the show, held a firm stance regarding this episode being the conclusive instalment, remarking that post the Christmas Day special, the series “cannot carry on”. Speaking to Hits Radio recently, he mentioned: “It can’t carry on, it genuinely can’t. And you’ll realise that there’s certain moments that happen in the episode which make it very, very clear that the show cannot carry on.”
He further explicated the writers’ standpoint, expressing, “We as writers wouldn’t know how to carry on that story.”
The much-anticipated ‘Gavin And Stacey: The Finale’ is set to be broadcast on BBC One at 9pm on Christmas Day and will simultaneously become available on BBC iPlayer.
