Christmas is a prime time for thieves to swipe items from your home, vehicle or doorstep with daily parcel deliveries for last minute gifts. But while we often leave notes asking for deliveries to be placed in a safe spot, the risk of leaving them in your car can be overlooked.

Now the AA has issued advice warning that thieves will snatch phones, wallets and even shopping bags from cars, urging people: “Don’t leave valuables in your car. If you really have to leave something behind, hide it out of sight in the glove box or boot.”

At this festive season, and throughout the year, it’s crucial to double-check your car is locked. If available, start parking your car in a locked garage and position your vehicle in well-lit areas under camera surveillance like CCTV or if you have a camera doorbell.

One method a thief can gain access to your car is by breaking into your home so you need to ensure your keys are secure and hidden. They might not only steal your keys and any valuables inside your home, but they could also drive away with your car, reports Cambridgeshire Live

The motoring experts advised: “Don’t leave keys on display in the hall or where they could be easily reached from the front door.” They also caution against being “tempted to take keys upstairs with you. Many thieves won’t think twice if you stand between them and the keys to the car they want”.

Top three models that are the most stolen cars in the UK

According to Confused.com, the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf and BMW 3 Series are among the most stolen vehicles in the country. Rhydian Jones, a car insurance specialist, has issued a warning: “Winter brings shorter days and it’s darker earlier, making it a crucial time for drivers to be extra cautious about car theft.

“That’s as this time of year can often see an increase in opportunist thieves.” He also noted concerning trends from recent research: “Our recent data shows that popular models like the Ford Fiesta, Volkswagen Golf and BMW 3 Series are among the most stolen vehicles in the UK.

“And, with more cars stolen from streets outside drivers’ homes (28%) than any other location, it’s important to take a few simple steps to ensure your car is safe.”
