A supervised drug site employee has pleaded guilty to being an accessory to a shooting that killed an innocent woman in Leslieville nearly 18 months ago.

Karolina Huebner-Makurat was walking along Queen St. E., near Carlaw Ave., to get lunch when the wife and mother of two young girls was hit by a stray bullet fired from across from the street on July 7, 2023.

The bullet had come from a gunfight involving alleged drug dealers in a parkette next to the South Riverdale Community Health Centre, which also runs a safe injection site.

Toronto Police believe there was a fight between three men – two of whom had handguns and opened fire on one another.

The trio then fled the area on foot.

Khalila Zara Mohammed, who worked with addicts in the centre’s harm-reduction program, was arrested on Aug. 14, 2023.

The Pickering woman, then 23, was charged with being an accessory after the fact to an indictable offence and attempting to obstruct justice.

Mohammed pleaded guilty on Wednesday to being an accessory to the shooting and the obstruction of justice charge is expected to be withdrawn, Global News reports.

After the shooting, she gave assistance to one of the accused.

This week court heard in an agreed statement of facts that Mohammed was in a relationship with Ahmed Mustafa Ibrahim, who was charged with manslaughter and robbery in the case.

The facts state Mohammed took an injured Ibrahim inside the centre after the shooting and that he received treatment from a nurse at the supervised injection site. She also gave him a change of clothes and got him a Uber to get away from the crime scene.

Court also heard that the pair grew closer after the shooting.

“Text messages between Khalila Mohammed and Ibrahim obtained by police established that the two of them had a relationship that blossomed into a romance immediately after the shooting,” the agreed statement of facts say.

She also urged him to “get out of the city” and to “lay low,” so he wouldn’t get caught.

Mohammed found Ibrahim a short-term rental in Pickering where he could stay.
