U.S. president-elect Donald Trump has weighed in on social media regarding the departure of Chrystia Freeland from Justin Trudeau’s cabinet. And he did not mince words.
“The Great State of Canada is stunned as the Finance Minister resigns, or was fired, from her position by Governor Justin Trudeau,” Trump wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, using terminology gleaned from his recent jokes about Canada becoming America’s 51st state.
“Her behavior was totally toxic, and not at all conducive to making deals which are good for the very unhappy citizens of Canada,” he continued. “She will not be missed!!!”
Trump’s comments hearken back to 2018, when Freeland, then international trade minister, was leading Canada in free-trade talks with the United States.
“We’re very unhappy with the negotiations and the negotiating style of Canada,” Trump told reporters at the time, adding: “We don’t like their representative very much.”
