The federal Liberal government released its Fall Economic Statement on Monday on a chaotic day.
Finance minister and deputy prime minister Chrystia Freeland, who was expected to table the economic statement, instead resigned early in the day. Housing minister Sean Fraser then resigned rather than take over Freeland’s role. Public Safety Minister Dominic LeBlanc was then sworn in as the third finance minister of the day.
The economic statement was eventually tabled by Government House leader Karina Gould, who left immediately without answering opposition questions. The document itself showed the government is expecting a deficit of $62 billion, a much higher number than they promised in the spring budget.
