The man accused of killing two people and injuring another after a series of violent attacks near the city’s Integrated Care Hub will remain in custody until at least January.
Andre Wareham, 47, was in a Kingston courtroom Friday afternoon where he was remanded back into custody and told not to communicate with an additional 17 people while incarcerated.
The names were added to an already extensive list of names previously included on the no-contact order.
He was told to come back to court on Jan. 3 to set a date for a judicial pre-trial – a meeting between the Crown, defense lawyers, and a judge to discuss the case. Appearing virtually from Central East Correctional Centre, Wareham didn’t speak except to confirm his name.
The local man was charged earlier this year after a series of attacks around Montreal Street brought the city to a standstill.
On Sept. 12 before 10:40 a.m., emergency services were called to the encampment and area around the Integrated Care Hub where two men had been stabbed. Shortly after, crews and hub staff were called to help a woman on the sidewalk along Montreal Street who had been struck in the head with a hammer.
The suspect then holed himself up nearby as Kingston Police began negotiating with him in a vacant lot on the west side of Montreal Street, just north of Quattrocchi’s Specialty Foods.
During the discussion, police convinced the man to send his dog out to officers, negotiated with him for more than six hours, then took him into custody at about 4:55 p.m.
Wareham was charged with the second-degree murder of Taylor Wilkinson, 38, and John Hood, 41, both of Kingston, and one count of attempted murder.
Following the Sept. 12 deaths, a fence was installed around the Integrated Care Hub and it was closed to the public and those who’d been staying at the facility and its adjoining encampment while Kingston Police investigated the incidents.
Almost two weeks later, the city announced plans to close the Belle Park encampment and clean up the site. Approximately 1.25 hectares of the park, including the encampment around the hub and the K&P Trail, was closed to everyone.
The charges have not been proven in court.
