A new Netflix series is said to be ‘so binge worthy’ that is leaving viewers ‘yelling at the TV’.
The Norwegian, which landed on the platform just a few days back, is stirring quite the buzz as it presents an alternative to the usual festive films and shows.
The gripping plot summary hooks viewers with this teaser: “It’s Christmas and high season when a Norwegian family checks into their favourite hotel on the island of La Palma. But beneath the idyll, a danger lurks.
“A young Norwegian scientist discovers alarming signs about the volcano located in the centre of the holiday paradise. She must convince her colleagues that the worst-case scenario is about to happen.
“If the volcano erupts, a mountain mass the size of Manhattan might erupt into the sea and cause the largest tsunami the world has ever seen. Will the family manage to escape the disaster of ash, gas and lava in a fight for their lives?”
This disaster movie-esque thriller has shot up to the UK’s top ten most-watched series on Netflix, currently sitting at number three, just behind the month’s other new entries, the spy-filled Black Doves and the dark No Good Deed.
While the Cumbre Vieja volcano, the most active on the Canary Islands, does indeed exist, the show takes creative liberty and is not based on actual events. The last eruption was in 2021, but this is not a dramatic retelling and instead is a work of pure fiction, reports Surrey Live.
Although it hasn’t garnered enough critic reviews for a Rotten Tomatoes score yet, audience members have started to express their views. An excited viewer commented: “This show is SO binge-worthy. The visuals are absolutely stunning, and it’s exciting from start to finish. Loved it.”
Another added praise for the show’s visual and narrative qualities: “La Palma delivers stunning visuals, compelling characters with each there own unique stories, and nonstop suspense throughout the series. It’s an exciting, well-crafted mini-series that keeps you hooked from start to finish.”
More positive feedback came from someone who was taken aback by the series’ quality: “The show was a positive surprise for me. I didn’t think I would enjoy it as much as I did. Well written and directed and a nice overall message on climate change. Some scenes were too slow and redundant but overall I definitely recommend it, if you enjoy the genre.”
Not all the feedback was glowing; certain viewers critiqued some aspects of the show, particularly its ending. A frustrated viewer wrote: “Lots of me yelling at TV – ‘get out of there now, why doesn’t that plane take off? , don’t get off that plane.'” Additionally, another person highlighted the emotional impact of the series in their post: “I’m over here balling my eyes out and rose over here just a humming ..10/10.”
