Leo and Lily were the most popular boy’s and girl’s names in Bristol last year. A total of 34 baby boys were given the name Leo in 2023, according to new figures from the Office for National Statistics.
Meanwhile, Lily topped the charts for girls with 29 babies given the name. The top names in Bath and North east Somerset were Grace for girls (11) and Arthur for boys (20).
Noah was the top boy’s name in North Somerset (20) and Amelia was top for girls (16). Arthur was the South West’s top boy’s name, with 400 newborns given the name in 2023.
The South West is the only region in England and Wales where Arthur was the top name, possibly due to the region’s strong links to the Arthurian legend. Olivia was the region’s top girl’s name with 277 newborns given the name.
Muhammad has overtaken Noah as the top name for baby boys in England and Wales. There were a total of 4,661 baby boys given the name Muhammad in 2023. Muhammad was the second most popular name in 2022 and has been in the top 10 of baby boy names since 2016.
Noah is now in second place with 4,382 newborn boys given the name in 2023. Oliver is in third with 3,556, George is in fourth with 3,494 and Leo is in fifth with 3,416.
Olivia topped the list for girls’ names once again with 2,906 newborns. That makes it the most popular name for newborn girls for the eighth year running, a title-winning streak going back to 2016.

New entries to the top 100 baby names include Hazel, Lilah, Autumn, Nevaeh and Raya for girls, as well as Jax, Enzo and Bodhi for boys.
Pop culture continues to influence the popularity of baby names including music artists such as Billie Eilish and Lana Del Rey, celebrity baby names from the Kardashian-Jenner family such as Reign and Saint, and film stars such as Margot Robbie and Cillian Murphy.
