Several U.S. law enforcement agencies were involved in a high-speed pursuit Thursday that started with a carjacking in B.C. and crossed the U.S.-Canada border.
At about 1:15 p.m., Blaine border patrol officers were advised of a vehicle fleeing through the Peace Arch crossing with Canadian border officers in pursuit, U.S. border officials said Friday in an email.
U.S. Border Patrol agents from the Bellingham station responded on Interstate 5 to intercept the vehicle.
During this time, the Canadian Border Security Agency reported the vehicle had been carjacked and the driver should be considered armed and dangerous, the U.S. border officials said.
The Bellingham border patrol officers unsuccessfully tried spike strips to deflate the vehicle’s tires at two different locations.
As the pursuit continued through Bellingham, the Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office took over the chase.
It finally ended in Bow, when the vehicle hit a barricade on the side of the freeway while attempting to avoiding a spike strip used by the sheriff’s office.
After a brief standoff, the driver surrendered and was arrested. According to U.S. border officials, police allege the driver had a machete.
Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office took the person to jail and towed the stolen vehicle, a black Toyota Tacoma, to its storage facility.
The CBSA declined to comment and directed calls to U.S. border officials.
