The eastbound lanes of Highway 401 were closed in Kingston Wednesday morning after a tractor trailer containing a load of tomatoes ended up on its side, spilling its contents onto the roadway.
Just after 5 a.m. Wednesday, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) announced a collision had occurred near mile markers 606 and 607 involving a tractor trailer.
Soon after, they announced the highway was closed from exit 599 County Road 6 in Odessa to mile marker 607, east of Gardiners Road. The closure took place so the authorities could remove the vehicle, which ended up on its side, police said.
“Crews are working to unload the cargo of tomatoes, which is quickly turning into tomato sauce,” police wrote.
The driver experienced minor injuries, police said. The road will be closed until further notice, they added, and detour routes are in place.
A reopening time is still “to be determined.”
