Lots of people struggle to sleep from time to time, and it can be super annoying.
There’s nothing worse than not being able to rest at night, and it can be a difficult problem to remedy. But some good news may be in sight, as a doctor has said a viral drink could help.
Doctor Sood recently shared a video on TikTok explaining how the simple drink could aid your health. He decided to look into the calming beverage after the idea became very popular on social media.
In a candid clip, he said: “This is the sleepy girl mocktail. It includes sparkling water to add fizz, tart cherry juice, which has natural melatonin. This signals to your body that it’s time to sleep.
“And magnesium glycinate which, in the research, has shown to help both relax you and help you fall asleep. Let me know if you’ve ever tried this drink, and if it’s helped you to fall asleep faster.”
Due to the fact that the mocktail contains ingredients that aid relaxation, many people claim the recipe works. More than 16,000 people have viewed the video, and many were quick to comment too.
One person said: “I have tried this. It definitely works. The tart cherry juice gave me nightmares, lol. Still take magnesium now though. Really helps!”
Another wrote: “I’ve done tart cherry juice with magnesium glycinate. It used to work and was lovely. No match for insomnia from menopause.”
A third also replied: “This drink has changed my sleep for the better. Never miss it!”
GP Dr Bhavini Shah, from OnlineDoctor, also admitted the “sleepy girl mocktail” has been a huge trend in 2024, with TikTok influencers suggesting a combination of tart cherry juice, magnesium powder and sparkling water as the key to getting a good night’s sleep.
While the name may not be medically certified, some studies have suggested that these ingredients could help you wind down in the evening.
She said: “Tart cherries contain naturally high levels of melatonin, which is known as the ‘sleep hormone’. They also contain tryptophan, an amino acid used in the production of serotonin and melatonin.
“Alongside this, studies suggest there could be a link between sleep quality and magnesium intake, as research shows that higher levels of magnesium in the body are associated with better sleep, longer sleep times and less tiredness during the day.”
What should I do if I can’t sleep?
According to the NHS, everyone requires different amounts of sleep. Generally, adults need seven to nine hours, and children need nine to 13 hours.
Meanwhile, toddlers and babies need 12 to 17 hours. If you often feel tired during the day, you probably aren’t getting enough sleep.
Insomnia usually gets better by making changes to your sleeping habits, but you can also ask your pharmacist or GP for advice. Always seek medical advice if the problem continues to persist, and you shouldn’t take anything to aid sleep without speaking to a doctor first.
