The allure of streaming content without the hefty price tag is proving increasingly tempting for many, with ‘dodgy’ Fire TV Sticks offering instant access to sports and movies at a fraction of the cost. However, with the cost of living crisis still biting, those opting for this route are being warned of the risks involved.

The Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT) has issued a warning that users of illicit streaming devices “risk facing serious consequences”. This cautionary message comes hot on the heels of a nationwide crackdown which saw over 30 suppliers of pre-loaded Fire TV Sticks targeted in a series of raids across the UK. As a result, these suppliers have been ordered to cease selling these devices with immediate effect, or face further action. Not only that, but a 42 year old man from Newport was arrested and a haul of TV-watching gadgets seized for forensic examination.

In a bid to further disrupt illegal IPTV activity, FACT also issued takedown requests to social media platforms and online marketplaces. Illicit streaming operations are facing increasingly harsh penalties from the courts, especially those ignoring prior warnings. In a clampdown last month led by the Premier League, a private prosecution saw Jonathan Edge, a 29 year old from Liverpool, handed a prison term of three years and four months for his involvement with illegal Firesticks, reports the Mirror.

On the matter of the fresh crackdown, Kieron Sharp, the CEO of FACT, issued a stern warning: “Our cease-and-desist measures are not just warnings-they are the first step toward holding offenders accountable. Many who ignored these notices in the past are now facing arrest and criminal charges. We strongly advise anyone involved in these activities to stop immediately.

“If you’re supplying or using illicit streaming devices or illegal IPTV subscriptions, take this as a clear warning: you are breaking the law and risk facing serious consequences. We will continue working with police to track down and shut down these illegal operations. The police across the UK have been unstinting in their efforts to tackle this criminality and we are grateful for their assistance”.

“To those using illegal streaming services, the message is that you’re not just committing a crime; you are putting yourself at risk. These services often expose users to malware, scams, and data theft, with no recourse when things go wrong. The safest, smartest and only choice is to stick to legitimate providers for your entertainment.”

What are ‘dodgy’ Fire TV Sticks?

These devices have surged in popularity recently, offering a straightforward way to view premium content without hefty subscription fees. Most come pre-loaded with access to illicit movie and sports streams, which can then be viewed for a nominal monthly or annual fee.

While it may sound appealing, it carries significant warnings. Although it’s improbable that consumers will face prosecution or imprisonment, this method of TV viewing can expose households to harmful malware and display unfiltered content that may be unsuitable for younger children.
