The top Toronto pet names in 2024 include Sushi, Yoda, (the) Dude and Moon, according to Rover.com, which dubs itself the world’s largest online pet care marketplace.

The company says the No. 1 trending dog name is Sushi, up 465% year over year, while the top trending cat name is Ricky, up 807% year over year.

Otherwise, pet names inspired by pop culture legends include Yoda, up, 807%, Batman, up 607%, Binx, up 607%, Kirby, up 282%, Ozzie, up 255% and The Dude, up 248%, likely inspired by Jeff Bridges; indelible character in The Big Lebowski.

Celestial names are on the rise with both Moon and Star, both up 282%.

“Pet parents are naming their dogs and cats after the latest cultural obsessions, from pop icons to beloved Canadian athletes, and even their favorite foods,” said Dr. Rebecca Greenstein, owner of the Kleinburg Veterinary Hospital and Rover Pet People Panelist, in a statement. “Whether you stick with a classic or choose a timely trending topic, the names we give our pets are a reflection of our own personalities and sources of joy.”

Rover.com’s 12th annual Most Popular Canadian Dog Names report analyzes millions of user-submitted pet names provided by pet parents and breaks down the most influential trends leading up to the year’s end.

The most popular male dog name in 2024 in Canada is Charlie, holding at the top spot for the sixth consecutive year, while Leo ranks first for most popular male cat name for the third consecutive year.

When it comes to female pet names in Canada, Luna ranks first overall (for the fourth consecutive year) for dogs and cats (for a whopping sixth year in a row).

Felix was the No. 1 overall trending dog name in Canada in 2024 and Pixie led the category for cats.

The Top Pet Names 2024 report was developed by Rover between September and October 2024.
