Fiorentina stars soon formed a protective shield around their 22-year-old team-mate to provide privacy while treatment was underway.

Bove, who is on loan from Roma, was taken away on a stretcher before being put in an ambulance to be rushed off to hospital.

Players were visibly emotional on the pitch as the devastating situation unfolded.

Referee Daniele Dove eventually made the decision to send both players back to the dressing room before announcing the game would be abandoned.

Serie A confirmed the postponement on social media, writing: “#FiorentinaInter has been suspended due to a medical emergency.”
