A senior PSNI officer who suffered life-changing injuries after being shot by the New IRA has been decorated with the King’s Police Medal by the Princess Royal at Buckingham Palace.

Detective Chief Inspector, John Caldwell, received the honour on Thursday.

The senior police officer was shot and seriously injured outside a leisure centre in Omagh on February 22, 2023.

He was shot multiple times by two gunmen in front of his son as he packed up after coaching a youth football team.

It is believed the New IRA mounted the ambush with the help of an organised crime gang.

Mr Caldwell had led a number of major investigations both into dissident republican terrorism and drug-related organised crime.
