Line of Duty actress Vicky McClure has appeared to pour cold water on the prospect of an imminent new series of the show after saying “nothing’s happening” on that front.
The prospect of the Northern Irish-filmed drama returning to TV screens in the near future had been back in the headlines in recent weeks after Co Fermanagh star Adrian Dunbar teased viewers that it “looks like” a new series is coming.
Created by Jed Mercurio, Line of Duty — which was filmed in Belfast — last aired May 2021 with Ted Hastings and his team uncovering the identity of the ‘Fourth Man’ and derailing corruption from within the force.
Rumours were sparked about the future of the series last month when Dunbar was seen in London alongside his fellow stars Martin Compston, who played DI Steve Arnott in the drama, alongside McClure who played DI Kate Fleming.
Sharing a video at the time in a rickshaw in the city, at one point in the clip Compston can be heard joking: “We’re back.”
Reports in recent weeks had also suggested the trio met Mercurio for dinner to thrash out details for another new series.
However speaking on Good Morning Britain on Thursday, McClure suggested things were not as imminent as previously suggested.
“It’s not even that we’re teasing, we very rarely get together now. We’re all all over the shop, we’re all flying around, so the fact that me, Martin, Adi and Jed were all in London at the same time gets us over excited.
“So we were walking to the restaurant and it was like oh, there’s a rickshaw, let’s jump on it. It was an impulsive moment and then we just go, oh, we’re going Instagram live. Because we know people will enjoy it.
“Look, I’ve said a million times, as has Martin, Adi and Jed, we all love the show and we love how much people love it. We’re in a very lucky spot with that. But until Jed and we all say something’s happening, nothing’s happening.”
When asked if they would also ever do a Christmas special for the show, McClure replied: “Oh no, no time for that.”
