Look, I get it, thinking about fitness is a January job. I live in the gym and even I ate a whole KFC bargain bucket yesterday, the rules don’t count in silly season. But if you’re waiting until the New Year to stock up on much-needed protein for the big health kick, your Christmas-depleted bank account will take an extra kicking. Luckily, MyProtein’s sale is even cheaper with this money-saving trick we’ve spotted.

There’s an up-to-80 per cent sale on the protein giant’s Black Friday sale, with the likes of their best-selling Impact Whey Protein Powder down from £41.99 to £21.49 for 1kg. Or the bigger 5kg size, which is down to £87.03 – which would cost £107.45 with the Black Friday discount on the 1kg.

However, one bundle that’s caught my eye is the Black Friday Essentials Protein Bundle, which originally cost £64.99 but has been slashed to £25.99. However, you can get this for £9.26 thanks to deals-stacking website TopCashback.

New customers will bag a £15 cashback bonus when shopping at MyProtein – but even if you are a repeat TopCashback customer, you can get up to 18 per cent off, bringing the bundle down to just £24.26 after cashback. All you have to do is sign up for TopCashback, search for MyProtein, press ‘Get Cashback Now’ and pay as usual after following the instructions.

MyProtein Black Friday essentials bundle
Inside the bundle you’ll get Essential Whey Protein, Impact Creatine, six Layered Protein Bars and a shaker (Image: MyProtein)

In the Black Friday Essentials Protein Bundle, you’ll bag 1.3kg of Essential Whey Protein – with the option to choose between Chocolate Smooth, Strawberry Cream, Vanilla and Unflavoured. You also get Impact Creatine, six Layered Protein Bars (flavours include Chocolate Peanut Pretzel, Brown Sugar Bubble Tea, Buttered Popcorn, Cookie Crumble, Matcha, Milk Tea, Strawberry, Triple Chocolate Fudge, Vanilla Birthday Cake and White Gold), as well as a protein shaker.

This would be ideal for someone looking to get into fitness and want to sort their nutrition out with as little fuss as possible. The Essential Whey Protein comes in at 16g and 106 calories per 25g scoop, which is very good for the price. I use Diet Impact Whey Protein (£16, down from £41.99), which is 35g of protein and 214 calories per 60g serving (two scoops). So the Essential Whey Protein actually works out to better value for portion size versus protein intake.

Meanwhile, Creatine is probably the only supplement – protein is essential nutrition – worth taking if you want to get into weight lifting. The main benefit is the boost while lifting, as it increases the supply of energy to your muscles during high intensity workouts, meaning you’ll be stronger for longer. Coupled with protein shakes, both will aid in healing your muscles (you build muscles by creating tiny tears in your muscles, that grow back stronger afterwards).

While the bundle itself doesn’t have reviews, the powder and creatine do. One positive review of the powder reads: “I am a frequent customer to My protein, delivery is quick, price is also very good and great value for money, the taste is exceptional my favourite is strawberry but all flavours are fantastic. Goes Well With: Goes well with oats and peanut butter.” Another said: “Tastes great after a morning session – usually opt for an isolate and add yoghurt into my morning shake but this did the job nicely as it has a creaminess to it that the isolate didn’t. Goes Well With: Morning Smoothie.”

Of the negatives, one person said: “Taste wise for the price is okay, tastes like cheap chocolate or American chocolate. Mixability is by far the worse I’ve had, it’s like angel delight except I didn’t let it set. Hen i picked up the scoop the powder did feel quite fine. Doesn’t mix great with milk, I do use skimmed milk though, and worse with water. Tried with whole milk, mildly mixes better. I’ve never used a blender with this product so it could be better, not worth the hassle for me.”

On the creatine, one person said: “This Creatine is really powerful and really cheap. I take 15g of it for 7 days, then 10g for 7 days, 10g for the next 7 days and I end up with 5g for 7 days and then I take a break for 1 week. Just throw 1.5 of the scoop in your mouth and drink with water. Never buy a Creatine with flavor because it’s more expensive and has only 87% of Creatine instead of 100% (Unflavored). It takes a few seconds to take Creatine so the flavor is not even necessary. Don’t take Creatine with protein shakes because it won’t be fully absorbed. Goes Well With: Water and other drinks.”

A negative review reads: “Great value for money and I am starting to see results however the creatine does not mix well and sits at the bottom of my pre workout or water. Goes Well With: My Pre workout.”

If MyProtein doesn’t do it for you, there are plenty of other health and fitness brands worth testing out. Huel have their Taster Bundle including eight Huel Black Edition Ready-to-drink, six cans of Huel Daily A-Z Vitamins (100mg natural caffeine), eight Huel Complete Nutrition Bars and two Huel Hot & Savoury Pots. Whilst Huel offers a more nutritionally complex shake (you need more than protein to build muscle), they can be an acquired taste, so might be best to start with this £69 bundle.

Alternatively, Bulk probably has the best tasting protein on the market, with a 1kg pack going for £18.04 on Amazon.
