With the cost of energy overshadowing the joy of the holidays for many, one supplier is lending a hand in the spirit of the season. EDF is launching a staggering initiative promising to help customers to keep their Christmas merry and bright this year despite the recent brutal rises in Ofgem’s energy price cap.

Current EDF customers can sign up to the December Sunday Saver Challenge to automatically get free electricity between 8am and 4pm on December 25. New customers can seemingly take part in the challenge and earn their free electricity as soon as they switch to EDF.

For those who want to go above and beyond in the saver challenge, they have the opportunity to earn up to 16 hours of free electricity on Sundays throughout the month of December. Their free entitlements will be added to their accounts just after Christmas.

The initiative doubles down on EDFs commitment to get customers away from using energy during peak hours. The Sunday Saver Challenge was launched in September and rewards customers with free electricity on Sunday if they’re able to push their electricity usage away from peak hours.

Every household that signs up to the scheme receives a target of how much electricity they should be aiming to switch away from peak hours, which the energy supplier states is usually between 4pm and 7pm. The amount of free electricity you can earn depends on how much you can switch, for example, switching 40% of your normal usage to off-peak hours can earn up to 16 hours of free electricity on the following Sunday.

76% of customers who signed up reportedly got at least four hours of free electricity in October. Rich Hughes, Director of Retail at EDF, said: “We know the festive period can be a time of increased costs for us all, so we’re thrilled to give back to our customers and hopefully make electricity costs one less thing to worry about when it comes to Christmas Day.”
