A former church and multi-cultural centre which was damaged in an arson attack could be given a new lease of life as a supermarket.

The listed build at Donegall Pass had been the target of a number of arson attacks over the last few years.

It was last used by Belfast Multi-Cultural Association (BMCA). It was targeted in 2021 while a second happened in April 2022, shortly after repairs had taken place.

Now, plans are under way to revamp the listed building and turn it into a “mini supermarket… convenience store”.

“The property has been the subject of a number of arson attacks over recent years which has resulted in considerable damage to the internal fabric and the main roof structure,” planning documents say.

“Alterations and repair of the roof were the subject of a Listed Building Consent application…”

“The application site is located close to the Ormeau Road which is key arterial route in south Belfast with frequent public transport links from the city centre and the greater south Belfast area.

“The proposed change of use reflects current planning policy as identified in the criteria set out above. It will undoubtedly protect the structure and the external appearance of the listed building and secure the ongoing viability and upkeep of the building.”

Speaking at the time, the BMCA said it was putting the building up for sale.

“After the first arson attack we had great hopes that we could return to the building and further develop our plans for the centre. The tremendous support and donations from the wider community really inspired us and we could see a shared future.

“Sadly, just hours after the repairs were completed, a second, devastating arson attack was carried out.”
