Barrie Police said in a news release that they remain on scene in the Bayfield St. area — reportedly near Heather St., north of Hwy. 400 — where officers, the tactical support unit and crisis negotiators were dealing with a person reported to be in a vehicle with a firearm.
“Barrie Police will remain on scene as long as needed,” an update posted at 6 p.m. said, “with the primary focus being on the safety of the community, the individual and the officers.”
Police said they had contacted the person earlier in the afternoon and were “working to arrange the safe apprehension of the individual.”
No injuries have been reported so far, but CTV Barrie said at least one shot was fired and police tactical vehicles had rammed a mobile home in a parking lot. The suspect was barricaded inside, the report said.
Workers in the area told CTV that the mobile home had been parked in the lot for weeks.
The incident led police to initiate a hold-and-secure at nearby Cundles Heights Public School, which they were in the process of lifting at about 3 p.m.
Meanwhile, homes and businesses on Chestnut Crt., Rosedale Place, Aspen Dr. and portions of Springdale Dr. and Farmingdale Crt. had been evacuated as well.
“The public is asked to avoid the area … for the police investigation to proceed,” police said.
