When M&S, Tesco, Morrisons and Asda sent festive sandwiches to the Express office for a taste test, only two supermarkets received the highest score possible.
On the other side of the spectrum, another scored extremely low for all of their festive sandwich offerings.
Starting with Asda, its best Christmas sandwich gaining 4.5 out of five stars was its Cracking Christmas Club sandwich (£3.35). Stacked between granary bread slices with a white slice in the middle was mature Cheddar cheese, bacon, chicken, cranberry chutney, and onion stuffing.
Once the reviewer bit into the sandwich, she exclaimed: “That is good! ” Taking another bite, she added: “You know what, that’s really good.”
Loving the taste of the chutney, the reviewer explained why it’s not a five out of five: “Tone it down on the stuffing a little bit, and that will be wow.”
Another top contender was the Asda Hog Roast sandwich (£3) which tasted “better” than what the reviewer thought it would.
Lavished in Bramley apple sauce, seasoned mayonnaise, and fried onions, the reviewer liked how the sandwich “got the tastebuds going”, adding there was a “generous helping of meat”.
Even though their preference would be for brown bread, in this case, “the soft white bread actually worked” well. The reviewer quipped “it could only be improved if the roast came off the BBQ”, giving it a four out of five rating.
Other options, such as Asda’s Boxing Day Sandwich (£2.50) brimming with chicken, ham, coleslaw and balsamic onion chutney failed to impress.
The Boxing Day Sandwich received a paltry two-out-of-five rating due to the overpowering onion – not recommended for those planning a kiss under the mistletoe at Christmas. The reviewer lamented: “Very disappointing… but it’s only 385kl [calories] so it’s not bad.”
Slightly better was Asda’s Let it Spice Curry Wrap (£3), described as “essentially a twist on a coronation chicken wrap”, which “had a good crunch”.
Standout festive sandwiches include Tesco’s Ho-Ho-Hog Wrap featuring pulled pork and apple slaw, M&S Pigs In Blanket Sandwich and MandS Surf and Turf Brioche Rolls – all securing five stars!
Perhaps it was sandwich fatigue, but by the time the critic reached Morrisons’ festive offerings, the reviews dimmed.
Morrisons The Best Slow Cooked Beef and Roast Potato sandwich didn’t win over many, with some critics disapproving of the potato. “Stodgy potato,” one reviewer said.
“Bit dry,” another commented. “I don’t like the potato in the sandwich.”
Yet, one reviewer was more positive: “The flavours are really good.” This prompted another to admit: “The beef is nice.”
On average, Morrisons The Best Slow Cooked Beef and Roast Potato sandwich garnered around three stars. As for the least favoured festive treat, Morrison’s Pigs Under Blankets was given a mere one star. “I don’t like it,” the reviewer stated.
And some mischievous elves were up to their old tricks nabbing the food without leaving a review for Tesco’s Festive Chicken and Bacon Wrap and Cracking Curry West Sausage and Onions.
